The Director General of the Hon. Jimi Benson campaign and the brain behind the recently held #StartUp Ikorodu Entrepreneurial Ecosystem Initiative for Ikorodu division, Mayor Deen Sanwoola expressed his views on the way to get Nigeria out of the economic woods
.
Hear him, “I do not agree with Ben Bruce’s viewpoint! Export is our only way out! Americans import a lot of product into their country annually but at the same time does a lot of export.
Moreover, I will smash my phone on the wall the next time anybody uses the toothpick importation argument to justify our dependency on imports. UK and America import toothpicks from China as well, so please toothpick importation is not the bane of our problem, none availability of exportable products or services is our problem! We are now in a knowledge-based economy and by now, we should be more focused on technology startups that can compete globally. Let’s focus more on innovations and look more into high growth businesses.
Our people should be sent out to be retrained on new processes and technologies out there, it’s either you disrupt or be disrupted. Canada now has a visa program for Startup businesses that are interested in moving to Canada, Australia also has one and so are other countries.
The competition is on to bring in the smartest minds into their country and if the government fails to create an enabling ecosystem for the innovative entrepreneur’s amongst us we may start witnessing the “Andrew wan check out sydrome of the early 80’s”
When the government builds a sustainable startup ecosystem for entrepreneur’s we will have products and services to export.
Again, Ben Bruce is wrong, export is our problem not imports. If you earn your income from exports in Nigeria, you can buy made in heaven for all I care!
Mayor Muyideen Sanwoola”
